Blogspot Custom Domain

You may be aware that Blogger or Blogspot allows you to create your own blog for free. The URL to your blog however will look something like www.your_blog.blogspot.com. To change this to a personal Blogspot domain like www.your_domain.com, all you need is to purchase a .com domain name and setup the DNS and Blogspot Custom Domain settings.

Setup the DNS of your domain name using the domain control panel as follow:

  • Create a CNAME "www" to ghs.google.com if you want your blog URL to be www.your_domain.com
  • Create 4 'A' NAME (without "www.", just your_domain.com) to 216.239.32.21, 216.239.34.21, 216.239.36.21 and 216.239.38.21.

Next, setup your Blogspot blog:

  • Login to your Blogspot blog
  • Go to Settings | Publishing tab
  • Click on the Custom Domain link
  • Type in your_domain.com in the http:// field
  • Save

This might give the impression that your blog is being hosted elsewhere but it is still using the same Blogspot hosting at blogger.com. Just that it is no longer using a Blogspot domain but your own personal domain name.

Note: www.wordpress.com has the same feature but there is a fee of US$15 per year.
