Do you know the difference between terms like "web site", "web hosting", "web design" and "domain name"? Let's use the mobile phone as a metaphor for website. Every website will have the following:
1. Web Design - The model of the phone (Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson). 2. Domain Name - The phone number (012-xxxxxx, 016-xxxxxxxx, 019-xxxxxxxx). 3. Web Hosting - The phone operator (Maxis, DiGi, Celcom). The web design of a website is the look and feel, the graphics, fonts, colours, functions, etc. This is like the design of a mobile phone which can come in various shapes and colours, and various button design. They also come with various functions like GPRS, 3G, MP3 player, camera, video messaging, web browser, etc. A domain name is used to reach a certain website. Like wise, when you dial your friend's phone number, your friend's phone will ring and not someone else unless a line mix up occurs, that is. Unlike a mobile phone though, the "Domain Name" and "Web Hosting"
need not be from the same service provider. When "Mobile Number Portability
(MNP)" is implemented in Malaysia, then we can also have a 012 (Maxis)
number from other phone operators. Web hosting of a website will determine whether your website's response (page loading) is quick and whether the website is always up (accessible). Like wise, a mobile phone reception, voice clarity and signal strength depends on the mobile phone operator at different locations.
