Website Requirements

Requirements

- Web Designer or Web Programmer or CMS

- Domain Name like "kawanhost.com"

- Web Hosting

Domain Name

There are many types of domain names but the most commonly used are ".com", ".net" and ".org". You can register your domain name with any service provider provided that the domain name has never been registered before by anyone else with any service provider.

VeriSign is the company which maintain the .com registry to ensure that each domain name registered is unique. Registration however, can be done through any ICANN-accredited registrar or resellers including many web hosting companies. After registering a new domain name, you need to renew it every year or renew up to 10 years into the future, in order to keep this domain name active.

Web Designer or Web Programmer or CMS

Web designer can create graphics and layout of the pages in your website. Web programmers can integrate your website with a database and other web technologies.

A Content Management System (CMS) like Joomla! allows us to create and maintain our website without web designers or web programmers. Joomla! can be installed from Fantastico in CPanel. Using CMS is similar to blogging on www.blogspot.com where we only need a web browser to update our website, instead of using web page editors and FTP software.

A web designer can create graphics content for your website whether it is built with a CMS or not. A web programmer however, is usually not needed for a CMS as there is no programming involved. However, CMS does requires quite a bit of configuration which can be quite challenging for new users. Those who have experience with blogging software would find it easier to learn.

Web Hosting

Web hosting is basically a service which provides disk space for storing files and database that is needed by the web design. The graphics and texts you see on a web site are basically files created by a web designer or content from a database if you are using a CMS.

It also provide access to those files by a web browser via the Internet. This access is called bandwidth. A 1,000MB (1GB) bandwidth per month means visitors to your web site will be able to access up to approx. 1,000MB of file contents from your web hosting account. A simple company profile web site would probably need only around 100MB or 10% of this bandwidth allocation. Our website currently uses about 100MB per month or 0.5% of our 20,000MB monthly bandwidth.
